Industry 4.0 – Water Jet Loom Weft Weaving Using Water


Water jet weaving states to weaving on a water jet loom. A water jet loom is analogous to an air jet loom but uses water rather than air to move the yarn around the shed. Water jet looms can weave very quickly whilst the yarn isn’t damaged as water is a smaller amount abrasive than solid matter moving the yarn around (like it’s with rapier weaving looms). Water jet looms are also less noisy than rapier weaving looms and use relatively less power.

Water jet weaving is just appropriate for yarns of hydrophobic nature like Polyester PET, Acetate CA, or Polyamides (6 or 6.6 for example). Materials that are hydrophilic – natural fibers like cotton, nettle, or hemp for instance – better not be applied in water jet weaving because the fabric would become too heavy during weaving thanks to extreme moisture absorption. In spite of only hydrophobic materials getting used for water-jet weaving, one has got to dry the material afterward.


Water-jet weaving machines were first developed in Czechoslovakia within the 1950s and subsequently refined by the Japanese within the 1960s. The water jet loom was first introduced at the Brussels textile Machinery Exhibition in 1995. A water Jet is that a machine for weaving cloth (loom) which uses a Jet of Water to insert the weft (crosswise threads) into the warp (lengthwise threads). The force of air-water transporters the yarn from one side to the opposite. These machines are produced only by a few companies and are used for these machines are produced only by few companies and are used for the manufacture of sunshine and medium weight fabrics with standard characteristics and water repellent fiber materials, Water jet machines are extensively utilized in East Asia, but have limited importance in other countries. They’re characterized especially by high insertion performance and low energy consumption.

In this method, a water jet is shot under force and, with it, a weft yarn. The force of the water, because it is propelled across the shed, carries the yarn to the other side. This machine is economical in its operation. A water jet of only 0.1centimeter is sufficient to hold a yarn across a 48 inch shed. The quantity of water required for every weft yarn is a smaller amount than 2.0 cubic centimeters. Water-jet machines may range speeds of 2000 meters of picks per minute.
